I am an online only adjunct. Why were we left out of the bargaining unit? Will be have opportunity to join later? What will be done to prevent a two tier system of pay and benefits for adjuncts between on and off campus adjuncts?
If we do create a union, and online instructors wanted to join, there would be no reason for the union to exclude them. It would only make sense for the union to want to gain more members.
My understanding is that the National Labor Relations Board determines how groups are categorized and they make a distinction between on campus and off campus adjuncts.
So you would need to organize separately. I would ask SEIU, or another union, if they would be willing to help you.
I've been through more than one organizing drive in my time. The bargaining unit is usually defined by the union, not the NLRB. Most unions define the unit based on a) commonality of interest or b) what group they think supports them. In this case I suspect the latter,
From what I understand (and I am new to the organizing process) the group of people who is eligible to vote is determined in negotiations between the union and the various colleges. I know that the union tried to get the largest possible number of people to be eligible - including online instructors. In negotiations, there was (as I understand it) pushback on this and the online instructors were excluded.
I think the union reluctantly accepted this, for now, because once one group wins representation, it paves the way for subsequent groups to do so.
Like Betsy (thanks for your wonderful My Turn piece in the Burlington Free Press Betsy), it is my understanding that the union had to reduce the number of adjuncts eligible due only to pushback from the colleges . . . BUT it seems like it would be really helpful if you could complete the bargaining survey (click on the link at "Home"). Your information may pave the way for other groups to be included as Burlington area adjuncts move forward.
Just wondering what the status of the SEIU's organizing drive is at Norwich University in Northfield, Vermont?
Write something about yourself. No need to be fancy, just an overview.
